The main objective of psychological care in gender transition is to offer comprehensive healthcare, not only for physical, but also mental health. Caring for your mental health allows patients to feel understood and supported in the process of a surgical transition and in everything that implies, for both the individual and the family.
However, if you are not a former patient and even if you are not planning surgery yet and seek professional and qualified psychological care for gender transition, this is also for you.
Goals of our psychological care in gender transition are:
- To identify the emotional state prior to the surgery: You will be asked to complete a survey. In this evaluation, questions are asked related to anxiety, depression, expectations, social support, previous experience with surgeries, the perception of femininity of the face and psychological well-being. The aim of this evaluation is to have an idea of your emotional circumstances and to address any specific emotional needs before surgery.
- To offer emotional support for the patients and their relatives or companions. It is well known that performing any kind of surgery can be stressful for the patient and also for the loved ones. Talking with a psychologist about your concerns and fears can put everyone at ease and even improve your mood and feelings. You may benefit from this support at all phases of your life, even if you are not thinking about having surgery.
- To provide mentoring in a peer group setting. The aim of the group sessions is to offer a space in which patients feel understood and accompanied. To realize they are not alone, fostering new bonds with other patients. This is a platform where they share their emotions and points of view with others, creating a sense of community.
- To evaluate the psychological variables that influence the satisfaction and expectations of patients, and to study how the CCGF positively influences the perception of the personal well-being of patients in the long term. With this aim, we pretend to show to the clinicians the importance of the CCGF for transgender people.
