Practical information about surgery in Marbella with FACIALTEAM
Professional Counselling support:
FACIALTEAM highly recommends professional counselling support prior and posterior to surgery to ensure the adequate emotional preparation for the significant changes in appearance produced by facial reassignment surgery.
Our patient coordinator will recommend airlines with flights to Spain. She will arrange the transfer from Málaga airport (AGP) to your accommodations in Marbella, which is about a 40-minute journey. Try to come with light luggage (no more than 20kg/44 stones) so you will not have to do any heavy lifting during your trip home. Don´t forget to check with your airline regarding the restrictions and limits on luggage. Local transport to hospital appointments will also be prearranged by your coordinator with our select taxi providers (included in services).
We will provide a list of hotels to choose from, with a variety of options nearby: from a resort with luxury rooms to 3-star studio apartments on the seaside. The costs for housing and meals is not included in our services and is the responsibility of the patient unless otherwise indicated.
Clothes and weather:
The weather in Marbella is hot and humid in summer and, generally warm during the day the whole year. Although it rains infrequently, it is possible between October and April, when a light jacket will also be welcome in the evenings. We recommend a sun-hat to protect your face from the stinging mediterranean sun.
It will be easier to dress with button-down or zippered tops to avoid having to pull clothes over your head. Bring comfortable, loose fitted clothing.
You will be under medical attention during at least the initial 24 hours in hospital. With more complex surgeries, a minimum of 2 nights in hospital may be required. However, it may be required to remain in hospital for up to 4 days in some cases. The amount of time covered will be indicated in your budget. Extra nights may incur an additional cost of 250 – 350€ per night.
In your private room you may enjoy the following amenities: private toilet with shower, cable TV, pay-phone, free Wifi, cot for one guest who is free to stay overnight too. The company will not cover costs incurred by companions.
To avoid boredom:
Bring personal entertainment items such as laptop, music, books and magazines, diary, games, etc. The first days after surgery you will be mainly indoors. Make sure your mobile phone is enabled to receive calls or SMS overseas.
You may have difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing food, depending on the procedures received. In some cases, it is recommended to have straws, wide syringes or utensils for children such as a flexible baby bottle which will be helpful for a liquid diet.
You will be on a liquid or bland diet for the first couple of days after surgery. During this time, we recommend high-calorie nutritional shakes to keep up your energy until you can eat normally. Once back in the hotel and you feel up to doing more chewing, there is a good selection international cuisine in Marbella. Don´t want to go out? It is easy to have take-away delivered to you, just ask the hotel receptionist. Companions are responsible for their meal-related costs while in the hospital.
You will have regular visits in the clinic for checkups and wound cleaning. In addition, we will lend you a local mobile phone, your direct line to your coordinator, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We will provide a standard medication package of antibiotics and painkillers for the week post-op. However, if you are coming alone, it will be helpful before surgery to locate the nearest pharmacy and supermarket, and buy some essentials (we will give you a list) to have ready since you may not be up to shopping right after surgery.
We will give you specific instructions on when you can wash your hair and how to take care of the wounds along with instructions for medication.
Additional Health Care:
IMPORTANT: Your well-being is our priority. We recommend that you come with a companion to help you out after surgery, if you think you may need it.
Sometimes a longer stay in hospital may be needed to ensure optimal postoperative care (with additional cost). Occasionaly, a nursing assistant may be required to escort you to the hotel (also at additional cost). After the surgery, the patient coordinator and the doctors will help you to determine whether these additional services are needed.
We would be happy to connect you with a trusted professional counselor if you need to discuss anything.
