Advancement and harmonization of the hairline
The hairline, in many cases, is a feature which can indicate the gender of an individual.
Gender of the hairline
The main difference is the shape of the hairline. A male, generally, has open areas on both temporofrontal regions which give the hairline an “M” shape. In women the shape tends to be more rounded and uniform in the frontal area.
An additional difference comes with age. The typical male pattern baldness and recession of the hairline often increases the distance between the eyebrows and the hairline. It is difficult to find this feature in biological females. Although they may suffer from hair loss, it tends to be global along the scalp and not concentrated on specific areas.
It will be of primary importance to determine whether lowering the hairline will have a positive effect in your case, as a low hairline is not a defining factor for feminization. Inf fact, certain studies find that female hairlines tend to be slightly higher in the middle if compared to male hairlines that haven’t been affected by male pattern baldness. Feminization of the hairline
In very specific cases, the hairline can be moved forward, if deemed appropriate, and given a more oval shape with the Scalp Advancement procedure.
The advancement of the scalp is a permanent solution for patients with mild to moderate recession but it is important to emphasize that this will not stop the hair loss. We strongly recommend that these patients seek an additional solution to hair loss such as hair transplantation to maintain the hairline.
The procedure for the advancement of the hairline can easily be done in conjunction with the remodeling of the forehead and brow lift, since these processes are performed through the same incision.
From our point of view and based on our experience, the surgical advancement of the hairline has a very limited indications, basically two: excess forehead tissue which also requires lifting or a hairline lowering that was not improved by hair transplant surgery.
Outside of these situations our experts recommend hair transplants, ensuring exceptional results, for the configuration of a new hairline as well as temporal recessions (widow peaks), and to improve both the quality and quantity of the hair.
Team Facial surgeons suture techniques have been developed entirely new in the repositioning of the hairline, which favors the postoperative period and allows optimal results aesthetic level.
Procedure
A section of the skin is removed (between the hairline and the eyebrows) which allows us to relocate the scalp forward between 1 and 2 cm, as desired. The lateral recessions, when possible, are also reshaped to a more feminine, oval pattern.
The advancement of the scalp is a permanent solution for patients with mild or moderate hairline recession. It is important to emphasize that the Scalp Advancement procedure will not stop the hair loss. It is highly recommended to look for an additional solution to avoid the hair loss, such as hair transplant to maintain an abundant and healthy hairline.
This procedure is sometimes performed together with the remodeling of the forehead and a subtle eyebrow lift, as all these procedures are performed through the same incision.
We have developed very unique suture techniques for this procedure, which will help in the post-operative period and give optimum results on an aesthetic level.
Post-op and possible complications of a Scalp Advancement
After the surgery, a bandage is placed which puts mild pressure around the forehead. This is removed the day after the surgery. You may feel discomfort and tension on the forehead and back of the neck, which will improve after the first week. The scar, which is hidden from the beginning, will diminish progressively as the hair starts to grow again through the incision line.
Swelling and bruising on the frontal and periorbital areas is possible. Lack of sensitivity in the forehead and crown area is also normal, which should resolve in due time.
